RIO with Max Hatt & Edda Glass in concert

For one magical evening, the Montana Club welcomes back RIO whose sublime musicianship & singular repertoire made them a favorite of jazz lovers across the state.  Composed of vocalist Edda Glass, guitarist Max Hatt and renowned bassist Clipper Anderson, their Helena performance is part of their album-release tour which takes them from Montana (opening for Romero Lubambo and Dweezil Zappa) to the East Coast to play at Lincoln Center, NYC, and NPR’s Mountain Stage.  Admission is free for Club Members, non-members must pay $8 for a temporary membership.  What has RIO been doing since they left Helena about eighteen months ago?  After playing Bossa Nova throughout Montana for 10 years, Max Hatt / Edda Glass & their original songs won the Grand Prize at the 2014 NewSong Competition at Lincoln Center in New York City.  “Max Hatt/Edda Glass often defied categorization,” said Gar Ragland, the contest’s director, calling them, “arguably the most distinctive finalist act--let alone winner--we’ve ever had.” The prize was to record an album in Asheville, NC’s Echo Mountain Studios with Wilco’s Pat Sonsone who recalls: “I was mesmerized from the first moment I heard them. They have the ability to create a deep sonic landscape with only voice and guitar, with songs that possess a mysterious and soulful magic."  This past winter they played officially at the 2015 Sundance Film Fest, where the editor of ASCAP’s Playback Magazine described their sets as “mesmerizing cinematic folk jazz.”
